Racist? Stupid? What?

A couple of days ago someone posted this comment to my blog.
Was there really anything offensive in my post? Why would someone blow up like that?
After I posted my reply he wrote back directly with similar abuse and said he wouldn’t be coming back, which was nice.
BTW, WordPress 2.6 looks nice – I should really upgrade!

Why would someone blow up like that? Hmmm, I don’t know… let’s have a thought shower.

It’s enough to get me riled right up. The over-sensitivity that people have for various issues and concerns is ridiculous. I’m a cracker through and through. Call me Ritz. Call me Whitey. Call me Jacka**. I really don’t care.
Just don’t call me late for dinner
It’s time for yet another controversial rant on j2fi.net. I think I’ll post it after my entry to the Japan Matsuri, though.

Thats just weird losing their mind over something like this.

People do get a bit riled up on the internet and tend to throw around insults that they wouldn’t use in person. I wouldn’t take it or him too seriously – it was just a headline and the article was not racially biased at all, just a reflection of what consumers liked about an an advertising campaign.

as a black man myself the only way I can understand why he got so riled is because he only read the header and didn’t read the entire post.

His comment was pretty emotional. He must have very strong feelings about a commercial being described as featuring a “black man playing second fiddle to a white dog.” I’m not sure whether or not you were trying to make a statement with pointing out the fact that Dante is black and the dog is white, but in doing so you sort of left yourself open to these kind of responses.
That isn’t to say you did anything wrong per se in the post, but even in seemingly innocuous sentences or situations, some will go out of their way to feel upset about such distinctions. That is a part of his worldview and you can’t do anything about it really.
I don’t think your cheeky remark to him about being friends with “nig-nogs” was an appropriate way of addressing his over-emotional rant, but to each his own. You pretty much proved him right in his mind. I don’t think anyone has to walk on eggshells for people who are constantly in search of racial injuries, but I do think that aggravating them is not going to help whatsoever.
