The CPU Exceeded Errors, which some of you will have seen when trying to access JapanSoc, have forced my hand. I’ve just invested in a virtual private server. This means that later this month, I’ll be moving JSoc to its new home, and there could be downtime of up to 72 hours while we wait for the domain name to propagate across the internet. I’ll post more updates nearer the time. More details on my blog.

Good luck with it all Nick. Hopefully it won’t take that long to point. I was told 72 hours and it took 7 minutes!

Nick, do you have an idea of when (what time of day, day of the week, etc…) the demand on your sites is the least? Just curious.

Billy, the busiest times are from 11pm-4am in Japan (due to U.S. traffic), with 2pm-7pm being the quietest. Sundays are the slowest (Saturday night in the U.S). For those of you using Google Analytics, you can check times under Visitors –> Visitor Trending –> Visits, and then change “Graph by” to “Hour”.

Good to hear that you invested in your own server. It will pay off in the long run.

@DBR, it depends on what data center is serving you. Let’s say for example, I have two live versions of JapanSoc running, one on the old server and one on the new. Some people will be looking at the new one after 7 minutes (which would be amazing!), but most will still be looking at the old one. If they then use the site, the databases will differ. What I’ll do is close the old one and only have the new one running live. So if you’re lucky, you’ll get the new one after 7 minutes, otherwise, you’ll see whatever message or replacement page I put up during the move until your nearest data center updates.

Good luck with the migration. Let me know if you need any help with it as my specialty is with databases and data management. Speaking of which … what queries were you having trouble with? I’ve also had some serious issues with some of the WP queries on my sites and I don’t attract nearly as much traffic as you do. Perhaps there’s a way we can better optimize these SQL calls

@Jason, there were hundreds of slow queries in just the last week. A couple I recognized were plugins: Top Commentators and Popularity Contest, but the rest were just regular calls to retrieve posts, etc. I’m not well-versed enough in MySQL to understand the details.
I’ve just had my first chat on the phone with Liquid Web’s support and it was very promising. I wasn’t put in a queue, I spoke to a native English speaker, and he was incredibly patient with me as he guided me through the basics of WebHost Manager – a truly daunting application for the newbie.
I’ll probably move JapanSoc last, so that could be two weeks away yet. If the problems persist, I’ll definitely call on you for help, Jason. Thanks for the offer!

I was just about to ask you about this (i.e. how you were coping with the overwhelming traffic).
*sad song plays on world’s smallest violin*
Sadly, it’s a problem I’ve never had the pleasure of experiencing.
Anyway, hope all goes well with the move. I hear VPS are expensive.
