Looking out my window in Japan is a tent …
-
ShaneS
Looking out my window in Japan is a tentative title that I have come up with for a post that I would like to feature at The Nihon Sun. Here’s is the fun part…I challenge you to take a photo out your office or residence window/backdoor (or both – you get the idea) and post it on you blog with a bit of a narrative between now and December 15th. If you don’t have a blog then you can always send me the image with a brief description (no large files please).
Send the link to me (contact@nihonsun.com) and I will compile the posts and possibly present a slide show of the images into what I hope will be a cool look at life in Japan beyond the tourist destinations. The only thing that I ask is that if you participate you grant me the permission to use the image(s) at The Nihon Sun which I will credit via some link love (copyright remains with you).
I wanted to do this via that Japan Blog Matsuri but Nick tells me that is booked through March and I didn’t want to wait that long
Comment here if you plan on participating and let me know what you think of the idea. Hat tip to Neil Duckett for planting the seed for this post in my mind.

Sounds like a great idea!
If I actually had a view instead of a concrete pillar and building in front of my window I’d participate

I might try to snap one from the head office when I’m there. Nice high-rise view…

I just posted a snapshot of my favourite distraction, the Yamate-dori Construction:

Thanks for supporting this idea guys! I will look forward to seeing some of your shots.
Chris feel free to shoot the street or something from the general vicinity of the entrance to your place. The point is to get a look at real life in Japan rather that just the temples and shrines or other touristy destinations. If other have a similar problem they can feel free to be creative with the concept.
AWH – Road construction works…thanks for jumping on the bandwagon so fast!

I’ve got a beautiful view off the balcony of my host family’s home in Sumida-ku. I’ll try to get that off to you tonight.

Here’s my submission, taken from my balcony after a typhoon this year. I can add to the description if necessary, and will probably add it to my new photography site if it being on Flickr is not sufficient.

Hmm … if I take a picture out my back window, you might see a ninja. Perhaps I’ll take a shot from the front and show off some of the nice mountain scenery that lies across the highway
Bill 10:47 am on November 30, 2008 | #
But, what about if I am not in Japan now?
uktokyoite 11:14 am on November 30, 2008 | #
Hi Shane
That’s a great idea and I’m really looking forward to seeing the results. I think I’ll write a page and add it to my About Me page – I can then forward the link. Is that ok?
ShaneS 12:31 pm on November 30, 2008 | #
Jason – I would love a shot of the Ninja, or at least his hiding spot
But the mountains would be nice too.

Hmm, how about Mt. Fuji aflame? Shinjuku skyscrapers in the rain? My knobbly knees on the balcony? I’ll see if I have any more interesting shots (all from my apartment).

Every time I look at this post I see the title “Looking out my window in Japan is a tent” and wonder just where in Japan you were living, Shane!

Did anyone get a snap of the celestial smilie tonight? When I left the office there was a crescent moon smile with two eyes – Venus and Mars? – above it. I only had my keitai with me, so I didn’t bother, and now it’s cloudy.
ジェイソン (Jason) 9:51 pm on December 1, 2008 | #
I tried to get a picture of it, but I was out with my wife when it happened. By the time we got home, there were too many clouds, and the moon was completely obscured …
Hopefully Venus and Mars will still be in alignment tomorrow

[...] Shane from Nihon Sun has asked the Japan blogging community to post images from their windows. The images I am posting are all from my lounge room window looking towards Shinjuku. I love the view from my window and often find myself on the balcony at all sorts weird times, sometimes in the freezing cold to capture what I think is a good photo. Sometimes they are, but more often than not it is hard to capture what I see. I don’t think I will ever get tired of “Looking out my window in Japan”. [...]

Here’s looking towards Shinagawa:

I am truly overwhelmed in a good way with all of your responses to this idea!
I will be starting to pull together this post over the weekend and have noticed that not everyone has included where they are taking their photos from (ward if in Tokyo area or just city if elsewhere). If that’s you could you please add a comment here or add it to your post so that when I start pulling them all together I have that information.
Also, any brilliant ideas on presentation are welcome – I have the nextgen plug-in so I am thinking thumbnails and a slide show due to the number of participants. Links back to your posts will be included in a list format if that’s the way I go.
The person who gives me the most brilliant(& easy to implement)solution other than the one above will have the honor of being on the top of the list so put your thinking caps on…
Thanks again everyone – JapanSocers are the best!
Nick 6:09 pm on December 13, 2008 | #
If it were me, no slideshow. For maximum impact, just have the photos one after another down the page so people who are too lazy or don’t know how to interact with the slideshow still see it all (kind of like this).
My photos were from Kakamigahara city in Gifu Prefecture.
Chris 10:32 am on December 14, 2008 | #
I agree with Nick.
My photos are from Nishi-Kawaguchi in Saitama

My photos are taken in Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo. You do of course have permission to use them according to the conditions mentioned in the post

Looking out the Window in Japan is now up on The Nihon Sun. Thanks to all fifteen of you who chose to participate in this post. I had a lot of fun pulling it together and the sixteenth image, all the way at the bottom, is the view at sunset from our balcony in Chiba.
Thanks everyone! Off to Soc it now and feel free to Stumble it if you like it.
If by chance I missed anyone please let me know as it was unintentional.

Thanks again to everyone! The post turned out pretty good if I don’t say so myself – but it was your submissions/participation that made it rock!
I love the insight into the lives of my often somewhat ‘anonymous’ internet friends – you aren’t quite so anonymous anymore.
