Japan Blog Matsuri Christmas Edition
-
Nick
‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all ‘cross Japan,
An unusual kind of Yuletide began;
Bloggers submitted their stories to share,
A Japanese Christmas experience so rare.Merry Christmas everybody! Thanks for jingling over to this festive edition of the Japan Blog Matsuri, hot on the heels of last month’s blog carnival, kindly hosted by DBR at NarrativeDisorder.com. Let’s kick off the holiday festivities with some music…
You all saw the Christmas in Japan music video, right? Well, YouTuber “fatblueman” has made a Christmas Swing Medley with all the leftover footage, and it makes for perfect background music while you read our matsuri entries:
First up, we’ve got Cards and Coal from Liv, who writes about Christmas at an English school in Japan.
Thomas has written a “how-to” for hanging persimmons. Nothing says Christmas like Tsurushi-gaki, a popular seasonal fruit.
Deas has written a translation of Exile’s cover of Wham’s Last Christmas, quite possibly the most popular Christmas song in Japan… ever!
Christmas in Tokyo isn’t about Jesus Christ, it’s about buying expensive jewelry at Tiffany’s, as Freedomwv did when he went shopping for a Xmas gift in Tokyo.
Hotei is the god of happiness, and even though he’s bald and beardless, he’s got the generosity (and belly) to match our Santa Claus. Shane asks which you prefer, Santa or Hotei?
Christmas isn’t always fun. Family feuds and burnt turkeys are common in the west, but how about in Japan? Ken has translated a survey about memorable Christmas failures in Japan.
Christmas Eve is the biggest night of the year for young Japanese couples. Mike explains all in his post, Christmas Dating in Japan.
Finally, the Bouncing Red Ball wonders whether robots will replace Santa in Japan. After all, his robotic clones are already conducting Christmas concerts!I hope you enjoyed this edition of the Japan Blog Matsuri. The first blog carnival of 2009 will be hosted by Bill at East Asia Fair, and the topic will be announced soon.
With all that said, I wish you all a very genki Christmas!
