Not sure why there is any need for a change. I like the logos as they are now.
Nick 1:09 am on February 16, 2009 | #
@Jordan, this is just for the .org group, and it came about because I made a logo (see my entry above), but offered others the chance to do something better… and they did!
Mike 6:13 am on February 16, 2009 | #
lol. I got swamped with work and couldn’t finish my designs
If anybody cares, the sphere with the swirl around it should have ‘JS’ in the middle. Oh well.

Glad my favorite one is winning so far
Looks the best for a .org logo I think.

Great selection of logos there. All have a different “feel”. Good luck to everyone in the running.
Deas 8:42 pm on February 16, 2009 | #
Ha ha – I’m beginning to get the feeling that I chose the wrong “feel.”
<- Green, with envy.

This is ever so exciting. It’s like a 72-hour horse race. Deas, you’ve still got time to make a cup of tea, fly to Fiji, snorkel with the dolphins, come back, rent a van, attach loudspeakers to the roof, and drive from Hakata to Tokyo rallying support with a groovy headband on.

A few thoughts. They all look far too, er, corporate. Don’t like the Chinese takeaway fonts on most, and the rest are dull. Needs to say “Japan”, but also “Must read/fun” Do any of these say either? Logo 2 comes close, but looks far too like a fried egg to me. I know everyone has worked hard on them and put in a lot of thought, but you talented folks can do better than these, can’t you?
Our Man in Abiko 9:53 pm on February 16, 2009 | #
Logo 2 of Michael Downeys that is.
Deas 9:57 pm on February 16, 2009 | #
Nick – I nominate that for “best comment ever.” At least, to date. On this blog. Ha ha.

Chinese takeaway fonts?
Our Man in Abiko 12:38 am on February 17, 2009 | #
You know, the kind of typefaces you get on chinese takeaway menus trying to replicate kanji in alphabet form and ending up looking like a pot noodle packet. Maybe I’m way off base, it’s just I think Japan Soc is a great idea and is worthy of an equally great logo. I really, really don’t mean to be critical of everyone’s (unpaid) efforts, but the logo is the identity of the group. Get it right and you will win over loads of new readers and inspire the troops. Fudge it or do a half-arsed job and that is the image you will project, which does no-one in the group any favours. The cartoon character with a sock is good, though the pun is lame, in my humble opinion, but it’s along the right lines. We have got to think about our target audience. Who are they? I would suggest they are fairly young folk, fairly hip and vaguely into the culture/image of Japan but want to know more. They are probably in the big cities of Europe and the coasts of the States. They are not stupid, don’t patronise them with a fake Oriental look and please, please don’t bore them. Our Man’s suggestion would be to take something traditional, like a woodcut image of a samurai or geisha and subvert it with a hip manga interpretation. Just some thoughts from a slightly drunk cynic.

@OurMan You should have said that two weeks ago when the entries started coming in and we were commenting on them.
Nick 1:25 am on February 17, 2009 | #
@OurMan My apologies, it looks like you did give us your opinion two weeks ago!
Mike 11:06 am on February 17, 2009 | #
Haha! It *does* look like a fried egg! Will you be having it sunny-side up, poached or soc-ed, Mr. Abiko? :p
Mike 11:07 am on February 17, 2009 | #
I just realised, I never uploaded the JS facebook logo to japansog.org did I? Complete failure on my part

Congratulations to Hao of Instant-Ramen.net! He is our winner by an overwhelming margin and I’ll make it official in the next day or two!
Hao 4:25 am on February 19, 2009 | #
Oh hai ^^ I forgot it ended today but refrained myself from checking every 10 seconds and only checked it a few (hundred thousand) times!
Anyway pretty cool entries and I though there wasn’t too much time for logo discussion before, I’ll take into account Our Man’s opinion too. I’ve been reading all the entries on the group but I too am a little bit troubled about what the next steps for Japansoc.org are.
In any case, thanks to all who voted for me! =)

Just for the record, I’ve emailed Hao about organizing final images and to get his PayPal address. I’ll contact the sponsors when I get that info so they can send him his winnings.

Does this victory mean that Hao, as a sponsor, will need to PayPal himself $10 for beer, ramen and er women?
Hao 4:38 pm on February 19, 2009 | #
I already sponsored my own beer, ramen, and err women, but the bill went up from $10 to a bit more ^^;
Thanks for the price guys!
http://www.BlogLinkJapan.com upped the sponsorship to $10 (thanks!) if you wanna change the total price Nick
